Sweet Book Summary: Clearly, I don't need to summarize the story of the Three Bears, as we were all weaned on it. But allow me to explain, in case you aren't aware, why fairy tales are important in early literacy. Fairy tales become very familiar to children and, as a result, empower children's literacy attempts. If a child is familiar with a story, it can be used to to teach many elements important in the aquisition of literacy including, story-telling, sequencing, character development and so on. Fairy tales are also often used in preschool and kindergarten classes as jumping off points to other areas of curriculum. For example, the Three Bears may be used to do math activities involving measurement. If your child is not familiar with The Three Bears, they may not get the most out of that lesson. So before you possibly write them off as antiquated, take a second look, especially at these more modern, winning editions of the old classics.
And then there is just the pure enjoyment of the story, especially when an edition comes along like this one. Clark's retelling of the three bears is modern and funny, and will appeal to children. I especially like that someone finally called Goldilocks out on what she really is - naughty! And the illustrations are simply gorgeous and quite lively. So lively, in fact, they seem almost animated. Your young reader will be mesmerized. |
